Quick Solutions to Big Common Problems
P: A wav file recorded with ZynAddSubFx crashed and cannot be played.
S: Make a backup copy of the wav file and put it in a safe place. Now rename the source file to eliminate the .wav extension,
for example, rename “corrupt.wav” file to “corrupt” . Now open “corrupt” with ReZound. When asked, choose Raw format. Play your file to be sure that it is OK. Re-save your file with a .wav extension.
P: Rosegarden complaints at startup that it needs “sndfile-resample” and therefore cannot import wav files.
S: Install samplerate-programs. In Ubuntu this looks like this way from a terminal:
sudo apt-get install samplerate-programs

P: I’ve created several instruments with ZynAddSubFX that sound great. How can I make a kit with these instruments and use it in Rosegarden as MIDI soundfounts?
S: Open your first instrument (this will be assigned to MIDI Channel 1) with ZynAddSubFx.
Now change the “part number” (you’ll see this number above “Edit instrument” menu) by clicking the right arrow besides the number. Number 2 appears. Check “Enabled”. Now click on the empty box and choose a new instrument. This will be assigned to MIDI Channel 2. Repeat to complete your kit. Now save your kit with File -Save All Parameters. To use the kit, open it with File- Open Parameters. Don’t forget to start Jack before opening ZynAddSubFx to use your kit.
Now open Rosegarden and choose ZynAddSubFx as your MIDI device in the “Playback Parameters”.
It may appear as “MIDI Software Device X”, where X may be any number depending on the number of your devices, but you should see listed ZynAddSubFX below “Instruments Parameters” heading. You can change the instrument of your kit assigned to a given channel by changing the Instrument Number# below Playback Parameters.
If you think that you did everything right but ZynAddSubFx doesn’t appear in your MIDI device list, go to Studio -Manage MIDI Devices at the Rosegarden top menu. Check any “No connection” that you can see and change it conveniently.
